ECSO Music in the Homes - Kohei Yamaguchi - double bass
7 May 2020
ECSO has transformed its popular Music in the Schools grant-funded program into Music in the Homes. These videos are a free resource for all to use to ensure that music education stays present in at-home curriculum. Kohei Yamaguchi is the Principal Bass for the ECSO after winning an audition this past September. He opens his video with a beautiful performance of the prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 and explains his musical background that led him to playing the bass. Like the violin, the bass is versatile in its ability to fit in multiple genres such as bluegrass, rock, chamber, and orchestral music. The bass is often used to portray large animals, such as John Williams' shark attack theme in Jaws, or the elephant in Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. He closes with a performance of the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony by overdubbing recordings of different parts all played on his bass. Our gratitude extends to the R.S. Gernon Trust and James P. and Mary E. Shea Perpetual
